Date added:

Vacancy type:
Trustee
Location:
National
Vacancy background:

Tiny Tickers, the heart baby charity, exists to improve the detection, diagnosis and care of babies with heart conditions before birth and in their first year of life.

5,000 babies in the UK are born each year with congenital heart disease (CHD). Half of these babies will have major CHD requiring surgery or a procedure in the first year of life. On average, only a third of babies with major CHD are diagnosed before birth. The rest are missed.

Early detection of heart conditions leads to better care during pregnancy and means that birth can be planned to take place at the right time and in the right place. The need for delayed, emergency treatment, which can lead to greater illness and poorer outcomes, is reduced.

Our mission is to give every baby with congenital heart disease the best possible chance in life.  Our achievements over the past 10 years include training two thirds of maternity hospitals in England and Wales, improving national standards and protocols, and increasing the average antenatal detection rate of CHD from 25% to 37%.  But there is still so much more to do and whilst babies are not surviving due to missed congenital heart disease we won’t stop.

 How we help:

·         Influencing national standards to improve detection, diagnosis and care by working closely with bodies such as the Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme (FASP) and the Newborn & Infant Physical Examination programme (NIPE)

·         Training to improve screening in hospitals, especially at the routine ultrasound anomaly scan

·         Raising awareness to inform the public and health professionals about congenital heart disease

·         Research to increase understanding of prenatal cardiovascular disease and its impact

·         Collaborating with charities, professionals, businesses and supporters to make this a reality

 Organisational information:

In 2011/12 we had annual income of approx £120,000 and annual expenditure of approx £110,000 and enough reserves to cover 2-3 months of running costs.  You can find our annual accounts on the Charity Commission website.
