Open MarketAbout Getting Ready for Enterprise

This course is for voluntary and community organisations that have a trading idea and want to take it to the next level.  It is designed for managers, staff, trustees and volunteers who want to develop sustainable income from enterprise activities.  If that sounds like you then this is the right course!

Traded products and services are important sources of income for many voluntary organisations.  Understanding and harnessing the potential of trading can help you achieve your mission, meet the needs of beneficiaries and generate new income streams.

What you get from the Course

On this course you will gain a better understanding of the key issues in setting up trading activities.  You will interact with the other participants in order to test and refine your trading idea, and form the beginnings of your business plan.  You will also receive interactive tools and take away a copy of The Good Guide to Trading (NCVO 2009, usual price £25) which outlines the latest thinking and techniques for trading charities.

The course has been designed by NCVO’s Sustainable Funding Project together with the Centre for Charity Effectiveness at CASS Business School, City University London.

“This was the best training workshop I’ve been to in years.  Normally I expect to learn one or two things in a training day but this time I was learning all day”.

Noelle Rumball, Trustee, BREAD Youth Project, attended GRE in Bristol

Topics covered:

  • Your mission, creating a trading culture and the team to drive it forward
  • Understanding the rules, regulations and risks of trading
  • Developing your trading idea through facilitated peer consultancy
  • Making it work by developing and marketing the product or service

The course combines speaker presentations and interactive sessions and should have 15 and 20 attendees to maximise peer learning. This event is only suitable for those who have a trading idea they would like to explore - even if this idea is only in its very early stages.
