The workshop will consist of three themed presentations followed by a group discussion:
Challenges to organisations in accessing social investment finance and possible policy recommendations
- Speaker: Katharine Danton, Unltd.
- UnLtd is a charitable organisation set up by seven leading organisations that promote social entrepreneurship. UnLtd - the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs - wants to support and develop the role of social entrepreneurs as a force for positive change in the United Kingdom.
- Katharine Danton recently contributed to the drafting of the EcoSoc opinion on social entrepreneurship.
Update on the European Social Investment Taskforce
- Speaker: Rob Hodgkinson, CAF Venturesome.
- The current financial climate is hard for everyone, and doubly so for charities. CAF Venturesome provides loans to charities, social enterprises and community groups when grants may not be available and access to traditional financial institutions is difficult.
- Rob also sits on the European Social Investment Taskforce (EUSIT), which was established to provide national governments with strategic advice about social investment policies.
Legal challenges for civil society organisations in the social investment market
- Speaker: Luke Fletcher, Bates, Wells and Braithwaites LLP.
- Luke Fletcher is an associate at BWB LLP, and author of NESTA publication Investing in Civil Society. Luke also co-ordinated and drafted the UK Social Business Initiative response to the EU Commission's consultation on promoting social investment funds.
- Bates, Wells and Braithwaites is a commercial law firm servicing a wide range of commercial, statutory, charity and social enterprises (and their owners and managers).

- Group discussion
- We will end with a group discussion to gather your thoughts on NCVO's policies on social investment, ahead of key meetings with the European Economic and Social Committee, DG Internal Market and other sector working groups.
