The Future Community Ownership: From Empty Spaces to Community Places

4th October 2010
Start time: 4th October 2010, 17:00
Finish time: 4th October 2010, 19:30

NCVO/LGiU Conservative Party Conference Fringe Event

Venue: Birmingham City Council Banqueting Suite, Birmingham
Speakers: Jesse Norman MP and Stephen Greenhalgh, Leader of Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

The issue of community ownership has steadily risen up the political agenda, with all political parties at the 2010 general election backing some form of community asset transfer.

The benefits of community organisations are well recognised: financial stability for community organisations, support for better public services and an empowered community. The risks are equally apparent: some ‘assets’ can be liabilities and ownership may distract from the original mission of the organisation, with many organisations facing practical barriers to acquisition.

LGiU, NCVO and Community Matters would like to invite you to join them to debate the future of community ownership in the UK and explore how we can best equip our communities to benefit from community asset transfer. Speakers will include Belinda Pratten, Head of Policy at NCVO, Andy Sawford, Chief Executive of LGiU, and Rosie Anderson from Community Matters.
