What we know about the coming changes
Whilst the overall picture of where cuts will fall and how remains hazy, we do have some information that can help to form a picture of what is likely.
From NCVO's Almanac 2010 and the cuts announced so far we know...
- That many organisations are over-reliant on funding from statutory sources - particularly medium and large organisations.
- That the government departments who have historically given the most funding (grants and contracts) with the voluntary are those who have so far received the largest cuts (with the exception of the Department of Health/NHS).
- That local authorities will be particularly badly affected, receiving £1.165 billion of cuts this year alone (the voluntary sector receives £6.6 billion in grants and contracts from local government every year).
- This may lead to the voluntary sector in some areas being affected worse than in other areas, because reliance on statutory income is not evenly spread.
- That the sector is facing cuts of £148 million this year - equivalent to 0.4% of total sector income or 1.2% if statutory income.
- That Train to Gain and the Future Jobs Fund will be cut.
- Plus, a lot of money was always going to end in March 2011 because of the spending round.
