NCVO Recession Summit
On 10 June NCVO hosted the second recession summit, bringing together sector leaders and government representatives to discuss the impact of the economic crisis on civil society and the action plans produced in response. Attendees signed up to ‘Support in Uncertain Times – principles for managing the recession.’
Charity Forecast Survey reveals increased economic optimism
The latest Charity Forecast Survey shows that a growing number of charity leaders believe economic conditions in the UK will improve over the next 12 months, with confidence levels up 28 percentage points from the previous quarter. However over one third of respondents (37%) still fear that conditions are set to worsen for their own organisation in the next 12 months.

Work Shadowing opportunity: A Day in the Life... (7-11 September 2009)
A Day in the Life is a unique opportunity for staff in the voluntary and community sector and central government to step into each others shoes for a day and learn about how the ‘other side’ operates. It is being organised by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), the NCVO Policy Forum and Compact Voice.

Big Lottery Fund’s Funding Strategy 2009
The Big Lottery Fund has published their funding strategy to cover the period 2009-15. In this they pledge to give at least 80% of their funding to the voluntary and community sector and provide an extra £45m to help charities through the recession.

Building Britain's Future
On 29 June, the government published its much-vaunted document -Building Britain’s Future. The overall aim was to downgrade Whitehall public service targets in favour of individual rights, with some enforceable by the community and others by individuals.
Communities in Control: Real People, Real Power
Communities and Local Government has published its ‘Communities Progress Report’. This sets out the progress made since the publication of the local government white paper ‘Communities in Control: Real People, Real Power’ and provides a timeframe for future implementation.

The final implementation plan of the 2006 local government white paper ‘Strong, safe and prosperous communities’ has been published. This provides a final update on progress, and sets out a timescale for the remaining stages of implementation.

Certificate of Professional Practice in Campaigning
The only course of its kind for campaign and policy professionals covers all aspects of good practice campaigning over 10 modules. Organised by Campaigning Effectiveness, NCVO and accredited by University of Roehampton. The next certificate will be starting in October 2009.

Gift-Aid survey
NCVO are continuing to work with other sector umbrella bodies to increase the value of Gift Aid whilst reducing its administrative complexities. An online survey is currently being undertaken on the proposed reform of Gift Aid into an opt-out system. This survey will help inform our discussions with HM Treasury and HMRC.
