Getting a fair deal - Overcoming problems working with government

The way the voluntary sector organisations work with government is changing. Contracting with government is increasing, consortia and partnership arrangements are on the up. As relationships develop it is increasingly important to make sure that it does so on a fair and equitable basis. This includes:

Proper notice being given for funding decisions, reasonable contract terms being agreed and entered into, and the independence of voluntary sector organisations being respected and upheld.

This short guide sets out what 'rights' you have as an organisation, identifies which decisions made by public bodies can be challenged, and provides you with tips on how you can achieve a positive outcome.

Values into Action

Values feature prominently in discussions about the role of the voluntary sector. They are often described as both a defining feature of the sector and as a central driving force for individual organisations. Values can be a unifying force that stretches across an otherwise diverse sector.

This report, developed in partnership with Community Links, builds on the findings of the Community Links' Inquiry into the Values of the Third Sector by looking in more detail at how organisations put their values into practice.

Standing apart, working together

This report explores the issues around voluntary sector independence. It looks at what we mean when we talk about independence, who and what can constrain independent action and the implications of these relationships and constraints. The report also makes suggestions for future action around voluntary sector independence.
