Ahead of the publication of the Coalition Government’s mid-term review, Deputy CEO of NCVO, Ben Kernighan said today:

"The country faces long term cuts in public spending and many people are struggling financially. We have less money, but more problems.

"The Prime Minister was right to recognise that in these circumstances charities can and should play a bigger role. He called this the Big Society. Charities are crucial in these difficult times as they understand what support people need to get by. They play a vital role in ensuring that limited public resources are spent well and engage millions of volunteers in helping to create a better society.

Give it back George imageThe successful campaign to reverse the Chancellor’s decision to limit tax relief on charitable giving achieved further recognition last night when it won a prestigious public affairs award.

Give it Back George, NCVO and CAF’s joint campaign, was awarded voluntary sector campaign of the year by Public Affairs News Awards.

The European Network for National Associations (ENNA) has received further funding from the European Commission to expand the opportunities for joint work and exchange between community groups across Europe; this week the European Commission announced a further grant of 100,000 Euro to expand this work in the coming year, alongside a specific project grant to develop advice for organisations in the Balkan region with the Balkan Civil Society Development Network.

Ben Kernighan, deputy chief executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, said today:

"The government recognises the benefits that could come from involving charities in rehabilitation services. Specialist charities, many involving dedicated volunteers, can make all the difference to the lives of people leaving prison and help reduce reoffending.

The merger between NCVO and Volunteering England (VE) was finalised today with the organisations set to formally come together on 1 January 2013.

Volunteering England chief executive, Justin Davis Smith, will lead NCVO’s new volunteering directorate under the organisations’ merger proposals, NCVO announced today.

As executive director for volunteering and development, Dr Davis Smith will be NCVO’s senior ambassador for volunteering.

Sir Stuart Etherington, our Chief Executive, gave the 30th annual lecture of the Attlee Foundation yesterday evening (8 November) on the subject of "Philanthropy, fairness and democracy".

Talking to an audience of charitable donors and beneficiaries, Sir Stuart stressed the importance of giving and philanthropy in today’s world where demographic and social change is happening at a rapid rate.

Volunteering England and NCVO have today announced the names of the trustees from Volunteering England who will join the board of NCVO as part of the organisations’ proposed merger.

Two Volunteering England trustees, Chris Wade and Tessa Willow, will become trustees of NCVO, while a third, Lynne Regan, will join NCVO’s nominations committee, which considers nominations for the NCVO’s board of trustees.
