Sam Younger CBE has been appointed as the new chief executive of the Charity Commission and will replace Andrew Hind at the helm of the independent charity regulator from 1 September 2010.

Mr Younger was the founding Chair of the Electoral Commission, Director General of the British Red Cross, and Managing Director of the BBC World Service.

He also served as interim Chief Executive of the housing charity, Shelter, during 2009 and this year is undertaking interim assignments with the educational charity Bell Educational Trust and with the Electoral Reform Society.
