Our response to the DCLG community empowerment consultations

4th May 2011

We have submitted our responses to the consultations on the new community rights measures: Right to Buy (PDF 109 KB) and Right to Challenge (PDF 72 KB).

Under the proposals announced by the Department for Communities and Local Government in December, communities will be given powerful new rights to challenge the running of public services and take over buildings and land.

This includes powers to delay the sale of local assets, such as village shops or local pubs, to allow community groups time to get a bid together to buy them (Community Right to Buy). Community or voluntary sector groups, as well as parish councils and council employees delivering the service, will also get new powers to challenge and take over a local service (Community Right to Challenge).

Find out more about these measures in our Localism Bill policy briefings.
