Creating a sustainable organisation
Is financial sustainability achievable?
Take a fresh look at your income options
When was the last time your organisation reviewed its income options? VCS organisations are increasingly looking to varied forms of income to sustain their work - contracts, trading and loan finance as well as grant funding and more traditional fundraising and donations. Recent figures show that more than half (£17b) of voluntary sector income was 'earnt income' - through trading and contracts - rather than 'voluntary income' - grants or donations (£13.6b) (UK Civil Society Almanac: 2009).
Has your organisation recently changed the way it generates income? Do you have an experience you could share? What kind of problems have you faced in making your organisation sustainable?
The Sustainable Funding Project believes that there are lots of ways that an organisation can become more sustainable. Do you agree?

Loads of charities are already earning income, but don't realise it! For example selling tickets to a show or event, renting out rooms or providing a paid-for drop-in service are all forms of trading.
If you are interested in exploring trading as an income stream for your organisation, take a look at the Sustainable Funding Project's trading pages. These pages set out what you need to know to trade as a voluntary and community organisation, and also real life examples of trading charities and social enterprises.
Trading can be a great way to diversify income and can also help you achieve your mission.
