Social Networking is it of value to Infrastructure Organisations?

I've posted a similar discussion in another forum on this site, but my questions here are directed towards staff in Infrastructure Organisations....

  1. Do Infrastructure Organisations (or frontline VCOs) allow and/or encourage their staff to move away from "traditional" forms of communication (such as email, post, telephone, etc) and to use Web 2.0 Social Networking channels of communication such as Twitter or Facebook instead?
  2. Are those organisations, or their staff, able to see any value in using Social Networking as a high-speed communication channel for distributing information to the Third Sector, such as publicising events, funding opportunities, job vacancies, etc?
  3. Or are Social Networks perceived to be purely for personal use, and of no benefit whatsoever to VCOs?
