Do charities need to become greener organisations?

We've been asked by a charity recently to develop a strategy to help them become more environmentally sustainable as an organisation.  With competition hotting up around grants and support, and with everyone looking to make efficiency savings where they can, wouldn't it be a good idea if all charities took a look at their environmental management and thought about sharpening it up?

I just wanted to see what others thought about this - we might look at putting together a cheap package/programme if it seems as if it's got legs.

And if charities did want to do this, would they need support, or feel like they already have the skills in house - they just need the incentive to do it!

Thanks, Gillian

Hi Gillian

I think this will become an increasing priority for organisations. Have a look at our post about climate change, which talks about the wide range of enviro issues charities may need to tackle in the future (and therefore the importance of an environmentally sustainable strategy).

There's a bit about the kind of support you're talking about under the NCVO Big Response project pages which might be worth having a look at as well.
