Guidelines for "Link" Trustees

A charity I'm advising has created "link" roles, whereby each Trustee links to a particular service area / staff team / policy area. I need to draw up some guidelines so that they don't drift into becoming advocates for that section, but DO bring their additional knowledge of that area to bear on board discussions. Anyone done anything similar / got some bullet points I could use? Thanks!
