Letters to the press
Submitted by Steve Lee on Thu, 07/04/2011 - 17:20
Interesting that the Guardian letters editor followed up his earlier piece on multiple signature letters (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/may/31/problems-with-multi-signatory-letters) with one on open letters last week (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/mar/14/open-door-letters-editor-expanding).
The impression given is that neither is quite such an effective tactic as those who construct them may think.
I'd be interested to hear your views and experience.

Multi-signatory letter are generally more trouble than they're worth IMHO.
Negotiating a text everyone can live with can result in compromising the clarity and punch of the prose.
I suppose it can be a useful tool on occasion - but I don't use it and often spend far too long advising my Chief Exec. on the pros and cons of ones he's asked to sign!
