A “mutual moment” for public services?

Olof Williamson
18th December 2009

Olof Williamson Profile PictureOn 15 December Minister for the Cabinet Office Tessa Jowell announced that we are entering a “mutual moment”.  She means that it is now time for community or staff-owned enterprises to run more and more public services.  Jowell’s speech is reported by the Cabinet Office, and the message is repeated in Jowell's Guardian piece.  This kind of thinking will be well received among voluntary and community groups that are already using mutual models.

Also looking to the future, public service innovator Charles Leadbeater suggests seven ways to save public services in this neat Guardian piece.  His tips include preventing need arising in the first place through early intervention, and enabling users to commission their own services directly.
