Almanac PosterToday sees the launch of our 12th UK Civil Society Almanac, the reference guide to facts and stats on the voluntary sector in the UK. I've now been lucky enough to be involved in six of them (so far). This year's almanac is a bit different.

David KaneA couple of articles caught my eye today, both talking about how charities are faring amidst the cuts. The figures, published in the Daily Mirror, show that 7,400 charities have closed in the last year.

Lord Hodgson's review of charity law recommends that the threshold for charity registration is raised to £25,000, with voluntary registration below that. We don't think that's a good idea - although aimed at relieving burden on organisations, we believe that raising the threshold will actually increase the pressure on organisations by removing an important signifier of trust - their charitable status.

The Cabinet Office have today launched the Open Data white paper, which brings together many of the strands from the government's open data agenda over the last few years. I'm really pleased with the progress here - the data that government is opening up can help organisations like yours to better identify needs, design innovative services and campaign for change.
