National Minimum Wage rate
From 1 October 2009, the national minimum wage rate is:
- £5.80 per hour for all workers aged 22 years and over.
- The development rate payable to people aged 18 to 21 years (whether or not they are receiving accredited training) is £4.83 an hour.
- The development rate for workers under the age of 18 and who are no longer of compulsory school age is £3.57 an hour.
- Apprentices under the age of 19 are not entitled to the national minimum wage. If an apprentice is aged 19 or over and has completed their first year of their apprenticeship, they will be entitled to the national minimum wage .
- Not all employees are eligible for national minimum wage.
- To check whether an employee has been paid a sufficient amount, follow these five steps.
