Managing Volunteers: overview

Many people who work in a UK Voluntary and Community Sector Organisation will often find themselves with a responsibility for developing and implementing a volunteer strategy.

This section provides you with a basic overview of some of the key things you need to know in order to demonstrate good practice in managing your volunteers.

National Occupational Standards for the Management of Volunteers

The UK Workforce Hub (now NCVO Workforce Development) developed a set of National Occupational Standards for the Management of Volunteers, which define the whole spectrum of activities involved in the management of volunteers and will help you to carry out this role effectively.

The standards can be purchased in booklet form here, and are available to download in full from www.skills-thirdsector.org.uk.

This section was reviewed and updated in June 2010.
