CIAN began in 1994 with the object of 'promoting best practice in internal audit, internal control and risk management in charities and not-for-profit organisations'. It meets quarterly in London with a speaker and a chance to share skills and experience through networking. It also organises workshops and training on audit and risk management.
The CIAN's objects are 'To advance the education of the public in the field of internal audit and internal control of charities and not-for-profit organisations'.

Membership Criteria:


Ordinary membership of CIAN is open to any person over the age of 18 years interested in furthering the objects, and who is employed in the voluntary sector as an internal auditor, or who has responsibility for internal control on their charity or not-for-profit organisation. Acceptance of ordinary membership is subject to the approval of the Executive Committee. Ordinary membership is contingent upon completion by the individual of their details for entry into the directory. Ordinary members are expected to endorse and abide by the professional standards and code of ethics as applied by the Institute of Internal Auditors UK and Ireland.
